Lit Up Episode 7: Kate Bolick on the Spinster State of Mind

KateB

This week’s guest Kate Bolick needs little introduction. Her article All The Single Ladies, a cover story for The Atlantic in November of 2011, made her a household name. The piece sparked unprecedented debate about the shifting dynamics of marriage and traditional gender roles – a conversation that is far from over.

In our chat, Bolick revealed how her landmark Atlantic article came to be, how it catapulted her into the spotlight, and how it enabled her to write her recent book Spinster – Making a Life of One’s Own. In Spinster she generously introduces us to the five women who emboldened her to fashion her life on her own terms. They are columnist Neith Boyce, essayist Maeve Brennan, social visionary Charlotte Perkins Gilman, poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and novelist Edith Wharton.

We guarantee that reading Spinster will prompt you to think about who your “awakeners” are. Emily and I had fun thinking the qualities we admire most in the women that have inspired us and we hope you do too. Please let us know who comes to mind for you.

If you plan on discussing Spinster with your friends or for a book club make sure to download this beautiful accompanying packet here. There are paper dolls with several super chic outfit choices and more.
